 Insidious was first released in the 2010 TIFF on the 14 September. It was later premiered again for a general audience to the United States in April 1, 2011. 

 

 Director and Writers: 

 It’s a supernatural horror movie directed by James Wan who is the key figure in the modern horror genre, the director of The Conjuring universe and Saw. The movie was scripted by Leigh Whannell, a person that had close affiliations with Wan most of the time.

Plot Summary: 

 Insidious is a 2010 American supernatural horror film that centers around the Lambert family who buys a new house in an effort to have a new start in life. But their life takes a nasty turn when their young son Dalton goes into coma after a minor accident which puzzles the parents. Surreal and shocking things happens and Renai Lambert, Dalton’s mother starts to believe it was haunted. 

 

 Truth, however, is much more horrifying. Dalton’s coma is not a state inherent in his body, but it is the result of his astral projection abilities. There is a dimension or realm, somewhere between life and death called The Further where the spirit strays in a realm of spirits and evil beings. The longer Dalton stays in this state the worse it becomes for him as all the darkness seeks to use Dalton’s body as a portal to our world. 

 

 Astral projection ability also runs in the family; Josh Lambert, the main character’s father, has that ability too, but he repressed it after a traumatic experience when he was a child. Then in a bid to save Dalton, they have to go deeper into The Further led by Elise Rainier that seems to specialise in handling paranormal activities. 

 

 When is transformed to The Further, Josh has to fight creepy spirits and Lipstick-Face Demon, which sinister intention is to possess a child Dalton. The tension of the story peaks on the fight of the protagonist Josh for the rescuing of Dalton and freeing from the evil spirits from their home. 

 

 Themes and Atmosphere:

 The Silence is applauded widely for slowly and firmly getting under your skin. It is not very violent, but this movie is very effective at creating suspense, sudden outbursts of shouts or scary tricks and pure psychological horror. We can consider that the story touches upon such topics as supernaturalism, love, and the omnipresent line between life and death. 

The depiction of The Further needed a distinct look which has been achieved by giving The Further a surreal style that is disturbing and memorable after the movie has ended. 

 

 Impact on Horror Genre: 

 Paranormal activity has breath new life into the haunted house subgenre by adding astral projection and another dimension into the mix. It was followed by four other instalments and solidified James Wan as the modern master of horror. It has become one of the favorites among horror lovers and well-recognized for creating great horror atmosphere as well as bringing something new to the concept of supernatural horror.
